Cheap travel Thailand usually falls apart at the bag drop. A Bangkok–Phuket seat sells for 1,100 baht, you arrive with one 20-kilo suitcase, and the counter adds more to the booking than the flight cost. Thailand’s low-cost carriers sell a seat and nothing else: every kilo in the hold is priced separately, cheaply when you book it with the ticket and brutally when you leave it to the airport.
This budget travel guide prices the whole chain in baht from the airlines’ own published 2026 fee schedules — what each carrier includes, what a bag costs online versus at the desk, the per-kilo penalty, and the three non-baggage charges that quietly inflate Thailand travel costs on every booking. Figures are Thai baht. At roughly 33.6 to the dollar in early October 2026, 1,000 baht is about $30.
Cheap travel Thailand: what each airline actually includes
Six carriers are worth comparing on Thai domestic routes, and the split is simple. The two full-service airlines put a bag in the fare. The four low-cost ones do not, or only on their dearer fare bundles.
| Airline | Bangkok airport | Cabin | Checked bag in the fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thai AirAsia (FD) | Don Mueang | 7 kg total | None |
| Nok Air (DD) | Don Mueang | 7 kg total | Nok Lite 0 kg · X-Tra 15 kg · MAX 25 kg |
| Thai Lion Air (SL) | Don Mueang | 7 kg total | None |
| Thai Vietjet (VZ) | Suvarnabhumi | 7 kg total | Eco 0 kg · Deluxe 20 kg · SkyBoss 30 kg |
| Bangkok Airways (PG) | Suvarnabhumi | Standard | 20 kg |
| Thai Airways (TG) | Suvarnabhumi | Standard | 23 kg economy |
Seven kilos is the number that catches people out. On all four budget carriers that is the combined weight of your roller bag and your day bag, not each. A 15-inch laptop, a camera and a litre of water will eat two of those kilos before you have packed a shirt.
Thailand domestic flight baggage fees compared
Here is the same 20-kilo suitcase priced three ways on each airline: booked with the ticket, bought at the airport on the day, and charged as excess at the counter.
| Airline | 20 kg booked with the ticket | Bought at the airport | Excess per kg at the counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thai AirAsia | 663 (15 kg 624 · 25 kg 845 · 30 kg 1,326) | 900 within 4 hours of departure | 300 |
| Nok Air | ~430 for 15 kg, or buy an X-Tra fare | Counter rate, must be bought 24h ahead online | Counter rate |
| Thai Lion Air | ~30–33 per kg, so ~600–660 | Counter rate | 350 |
| Thai Vietjet | Sold from 15 kg in 5 kg steps, or a Deluxe fare | Higher than online | Higher than online |
The 300-baht-a-kilo moment
The penalty rates are where a cheap fare turns expensive, and the trap is subtler than simply forgetting. Buy AirAsia’s 15 kg tier for 624 baht to save 39 baht over the 20 kg tier, then weigh in at 20 kg, and those five kilos are excess at 300 baht each: 1,500 baht, on top of what you already paid. Thai Lion charges 350 a kilo at the desk, more than ten times its prepaid rate. Always buy one tier more than you think you need — the gap between 20 and 25 kg on AirAsia is 182 baht, and a single kilo of excess costs more than that.
The fees that are not baggage
Baggage is the big one, but Thai AirAsia’s published schedule lists several more that land on an ordinary booking. These are per passenger, per sector — so a return trip for two doubles twice.
| Charge | Baht | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Credit or debit card processing | 128.40 | Pay by Thai bank transfer or at a 7-Eleven counter: 107 |
| Booking service fee (per booking) | 267.50 | Book in the app rather than by phone or at a sales office |
| Standard seat, chosen at booking | 256 | Skip it — seats are assigned free at check-in |
| Standard seat, chosen at the airport | 368 | As above |
| Hot seat (front row or exit row) | 784 at booking, 1,120 at the airport | Worth it only on a long sector |
| Cabin bag excess, up to 3 kg over | 80 per kg | Wear the heavy jacket, carry the laptop |
| Bag taken off you at the gate | 1,080 | Keep the cabin bag within 56 x 36 x 23 cm |
| Flight change | 802.50 | Often cheaper to rebook a new cheap fare |
Worked example: two people, Bangkok to Phuket
One way, one 20-kilo case each, on a typical 1,100-baht Thai AirAsia fare, paid by card.
| How you book it | Fares | Bags | Card fee | Total for two |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 kg bought with the ticket | 2,200 | 1,326 | 257 | 3,783 |
| Bag bought at the airport | 2,200 | 1,800 | 257 | 4,257 |
| 15 kg bought, bags weigh 20 kg | 2,200 | 1,248 + 3,000 excess | 257 | 6,705 |
| Cabin bags only, 7 kg each | 2,200 | 0 | 257 | 2,457 |
The spread between the best and worst row is 4,248 baht — around $126, or two nights in a decent room. It is also worth checking Bangkok Airways before you assume the budget carrier wins: a 2,800-baht fare with 20 kg and lounge access included sits within about 900 baht of a 1,100-baht AirAsia fare once the bag and card fee are added, and it flies from Suvarnabhumi.
The airport is part of the price
Which Bangkok airport your cheap fare uses changes your Thailand travel costs before you board. Don Mueang is served by the SRT Red Line at 33 baht; Suvarnabhumi airport transit runs on the Airport Rail Link at 45 baht. Both are trivial next to a 1,000-baht taxi at 3am, which is what an awkward departure time can cost you. Our guides to getting into town from Don Mueang and to when to book flights to Thailand cover both ends.
Bottom line: your cheap travel Thailand savings summary
- Buy the bag with the ticket. 663 baht on AirAsia against 900 at the airport, and roughly 30 baht a kilo on Thai Lion against 350.
- Buy one tier up. 20 kg costs 39 baht more than 15 kg; one kilo of excess costs 300.
- Weigh your bag at the hotel. Most guesthouses have scales at reception, and it is free.
- Seven kilos is cabin bag plus day bag combined. Not each.
- Never pay to pick a seat. 256 baht for 70 minutes; check-in assigns one free.
- Pay at 7-Eleven, not by card. 107 baht against 128.40, per person per sector.
- Compare the full-service fare. Bangkok Airways at 20 kg included is often within 900 baht of a budget fare plus bag.
- Travel cabin-only where you can. On the example above it cut the bill by a third.
Pack light and book the bag early and a Bangkok–Phuket pair costs 2,457 baht instead of 6,705 — more than 4,200 baht of Thailand travel costs recovered, which against an average cost per day Thailand-wide of 1,500–2,500 baht is close to two extra days on the road. Cheap travel Thailand: quick answers
Do Thailand domestic flights include checked baggage?
Not on the cheapest fares. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air include none at all; Nok Lite and Vietjet Eco include none, while Nok X-Tra carries 15 kg, Nok MAX 25 kg, Vietjet Deluxe 20 kg and SkyBoss 30 kg. Bangkok Airways includes 20 kg and Thai Airways 23 kg in economy. All four budget carriers allow 7 kg of cabin baggage, counting your main bag and personal item together.
How much is a checked bag on Thai AirAsia?
Booked with the ticket on a domestic route, 624 baht for 15 kg, 663 for 20 kg, 845 for 25 kg and 1,326 for 30 kg. Bought at the airport within four hours of departure the first 20 kg costs 900 baht. Anything over the allowance you have bought is charged at 300 baht per kilo at the counter, and a cabin bag pulled at the gate costs 1,080.
Which is cheaper for Bangkok to Phuket with luggage?
For two people with one 20-kilo bag each on a 1,100-baht fare, booking the bags online costs 3,783 baht all in, against 4,257 at the airport and 6,705 if you under-buy the allowance and pay excess. Travelling with cabin bags only brings it to 2,457. A Bangkok Airways fare with 20 kg included is usually within about 900 baht of the properly booked budget total.
What hidden fees do Thai budget airlines charge?
Card processing at 128.40 baht per passenger per sector, against 107 for a bank transfer or a 7-Eleven payment; a 267.50-baht booking service fee if you do not book online; seat selection from 256 baht at booking and 368 at the airport; 80 baht per kilo for cabin baggage up to 3 kg over the limit; and 802.50 baht to change a flight. None of these appear in the fare you see on a search engine.
