Thailand budget travel comes apart on the Phi Phi crossing. The boat itself is cheap — 450 to 550 baht from Krabi or Phuket — but almost nobody pays only the boat. Between the hotel desk markup, a 20-baht landing fee, a 400-baht national park ticket and a long-tail charter you did not plan for, a couple can turn a 1,000-baht ride into an 8,000-baht day without ever feeling overcharged.
This budget travel guide prices the whole chain in Thai baht from the operators’ own 2026 timetables and the park authority’s published fees: every pier, every fare, every surcharge, and the exact point where the money leaks. Figures are Thai baht. At roughly 33.6 to the dollar in October 2026, 1,000 baht is about $30 — a useful Thai baht exchange rule of thumb to carry.
Thailand budget travel: what the Phi Phi boat actually costs
There is no bridge and no airport on Phi Phi, so the boat is the only way in. Fares split cleanly into two tiers: a scheduled passenger ferry taking 90 minutes to two hours, and a speedboat taking 30 to 60 minutes for roughly double the money.
| Route | Boat | Adult one way | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krabi (Klong Jilad) → Tonsai | Songserm / Andaman Wave ferry | 450–490 | 1h30–2h |
| Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara) → Tonsai | Ao Nang Princess ferry | 520 online · 650 with hotel pickup | ~2h |
| Phuket (Rassada) → Tonsai | Chaokoh / Andaman Wave ferry | 550 (child 4–11: 450) | ~2h |
| Phuket (Rassada) → Tonsai | Speedboat, join transfer | 800 (child 600) | 45–60 min |
| Krabi / Ao Nang / Railay → Tonsai | Bundhaya, Gosafe, Chaokoh speedboats | 820–1,300 | 30–60 min |
| Koh Lanta (Saladan) → Tonsai | Ferry or speedboat | ~700 | 30 min–1h |
| Tonsai → Phuket Airport | Ferry plus shared minivan | 800 (child 750) | ~4h |
Two things fall out of that table immediately. Krabi is the cheaper gateway by about 100 baht a head each way, and the speedboat premium on the Phuket run is 250 baht to save an hour — genuinely good value if you are connecting to a flight, and money burnt if you are not.
Thailand travel costs the ferry ticket does not cover
The fare gets you from pier to pier. Everything below is extra, and all of it is collected in cash on the day, which is why it never shows up in the price you remember paying.
| Charge | Baht | Where you pay it |
|---|---|---|
| Tonsai island landing fee | 20 per person | Cash, at the end of the pier |
| Mu Ko Phi Phi national park fee | 400 adult · 200 child 3–14 | Boat or kiosk at Maya Bay, Pileh, Bamboo |
| Same fee, Thai nationals | 40 adult · 20 child | Dual pricing, ten times cheaper |
| Diving supplement on top of the park fee | +200 per diving day | Dive boat |
| Grab or taxi, Patong → Rassada Pier | 130–180 (Kata 160–220, Bang Tao 200–280) | In the app |
| Krabi Airport → Klong Jilad Pier, pre-booked car | 600–700 | Online, 20 km |
| Long-tail charter, Tonsai → Maya Bay | 600–800 per boat, not per person | Beachfront, negotiable |
| Long-tail to Monkey Beach | 400–600 per boat | Beachfront, negotiable |
| Snorkel mask and fins hire | 100–200 | Any dive shop on Tonsai |
The 400-baht ticket most people pay twice
The national park fee is the single biggest avoidable line. It covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island, it lasts the day, and it is charged per entry — so booking a Maya Bay tour on Monday and a Bamboo Island tour on Tuesday means paying 400 baht twice. Do your protected-area sightseeing in one day and you keep 400 baht per person. Thais pay 40. That dual pricing is published policy rather than a scam, but it does mean a foreign couple starts 720 baht behind a Thai couple before the boat moves. Maya Bay also closes entirely from 1 August to 30 September, so a shoulder-season trip may not need the ticket at all.
Worked example: two people, Krabi to Phi Phi to Phuket
Same trip, same two nights, same Maya Bay morning — booked two different ways. This is where Thailand travel costs are won or lost.
| Item | Booked yourself | Booked at the hotel desk |
|---|---|---|
| Krabi → Tonsai, two adults | 980 (ferry at 490) | 1,300 (650 each with pickup) |
| Island landing fee | 40 | 40 |
| Maya Bay and Pileh | 350 (half a 700-baht long-tail, shared) | 4,800 (speedboat tour at 2,400 each) |
| National park fee | 800 | 800 |
| Tonsai → Phuket, two adults | 1,100 (ferry at 550) | 1,600 (speedboat at 800) |
| Total | 3,270 | 8,540 |
The gap is 5,270 baht — about $157, or three nights in a fan room on Tonsai. Nothing in the right-hand column is a rip-off; every item is a real service at a normal price. It is simply the difference between buying transport and buying a package.
Thailand travel tips for the pier itself
Buy ferry tickets online or at the pier counter, not from a shopfront agent — the agent markup on the Phuket run typically runs 100 to 200 baht a ticket for the same seat on the same boat. Carry small notes: the 20-baht island fee and the park kiosk both want exact cash, and the nearest ATM charges the usual 220-baht foreign card fee. Finally, do not pay for a hotel transfer to Rassada if you are anywhere near Patong; a Grab at 130–180 baht carries two people and two bags for less than one seat on a shared van.
Bottom line: your Thailand budget travel savings summary
- Leave from Krabi, not Phuket. 450–490 against 550, each way, each person.
- Take the ferry unless you have a flight. The speedboat costs 250–800 baht more to save an hour.
- Charter a long-tail, do not book a tour. 600–800 per boat against 2,400 per person.
- Stack your park days. One 400-baht ticket covers Maya Bay, Pileh and Bamboo — on the same day only.
- Skip the hotel-desk ferry package. 650 with pickup against 520 online plus a 50-baht songthaew.
- Keep 100 baht in coins and 20s. For the landing fee and the park kiosk.
- Travelling August or September? Maya Bay is closed, so do not pre-pay a tour that includes it.
- Book the boat, not the bundle. On the example above that alone is 5,270 baht.
Run the budget version and two people reach Phi Phi, see Maya Bay and carry on to Phuket for 3,270 baht — against an average cost per day Thailand-wide of 1,500 to 2,500 baht, the 5,270 you save is roughly two extra days on the road. Our guides to getting from Phuket airport into town and to Thailand’s dual pricing rules cover the two ends of this trip, and you can drop your own route into our Thailand trip budget estimator to see what it does to the total.
Thailand budget travel: quick answers
How much is the ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi?
The scheduled passenger ferry from Rassada Pier to Tonsai costs 550 baht for an adult and 450 for a child aged 4 to 11, taking about two hours, with departures roughly between 08:30 and 15:00. A join-transfer speedboat on the same route is 800 baht adult and 600 child and takes 45 to 60 minutes. From Krabi’s Klong Jilad Pier the same ferry crossing is cheaper at 450 to 490 baht.
Do you have to pay a national park fee on Phi Phi?
Only to enter the protected areas. Landing at Tonsai on Phi Phi Don costs just a 20-baht island fee. Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island sit inside Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, where foreign adults pay 400 baht and children aged 3 to 14 pay 200, against 40 and 20 for Thai nationals. The ticket covers one day, so visit all of them together.
Is it cheaper to book Phi Phi ferry tickets online or at the pier?
Online and the pier counter are much the same price; the money is lost to shopfront travel agents and hotel desks, who typically add 100 to 200 baht a ticket, and to packages that bundle a van pickup you could replace with a 50-baht songthaew. Booking online does guarantee a seat in high season, which matters on the 08:30 and 13:30 Krabi departures.
What is the cheapest way to see Maya Bay?
Stay a night on Phi Phi Don and charter a long-tail from Tonsai beach rather than buying a day tour from Phuket or Krabi. A long-tail is 600 to 800 baht for the whole boat to Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, so four people pay 150 to 200 each, against 1,800 to 2,800 per person for a speedboat tour. The 400-baht park fee is extra either way, and Maya Bay closes from 1 August to 30 September.
