Cheap travel Thailand runs on a green-and-orange shopfront. There are more than 15,000 7-Eleven branches in the country — CP All reported 15,595 at the middle of 2025 — and for most visitors that counter is where the daily budget is actually won or lost. Breakfast, water, a beer, a SIM top-up, a phone charger at midnight: the prices are printed, fixed nationwide, and roughly a third of what the same items cost forty metres away inside a hotel.

The 100-baht basket, priced twice

One hundred baht — about $3.10 — is a real meal here. A ham and cheese toastie at 35, a pack of cut jackfruit at 37, a soda at 15 and a jelly at 10 comes to 97 baht and leaves you full. Swap in a 45-baht rice-and-pork tray, a 25-baht pineapple pack and a 25-baht coconut water and you are at 95.

The same three items bought from a hotel lobby shop or a beachfront minimart run 250–320 baht. Nothing dishonest is happening; it is simply the postcode premium that governs every line of Thailand travel costs, from rooms to cheap food in Bangkok.

Thailand travel costs: 7-Eleven against the alternatives

The interesting comparison is not 7-Eleven against the street stall — the stall usually wins on hot food. It is 7-Eleven against the places that catch you when you cannot be bothered to walk.

Run that over a fortnight. Skip the hotel breakfast you did not pre-pay for and build one from the shop — toastie 35, fresh coffee 35, water 10, so 80 baht against about 450. That is 370 baht a day, 5,180 baht across fourteen mornings, near enough $162. Add two large beers a night bought at the shop rather than the beach bar (60 against 150) and you save another 2,520. Three bottles of water a day from the shelf rather than the minibar saves roughly 1,000 more. The running total is about 8,700 baht, or $270, for a fortnight of walking fifty metres.

Paying at the counter without losing money

Cards are accepted in almost every branch, and that is where a cheap basket quietly becomes an expensive one. Three rules:

• Always pay in Thai baht. If the terminal offers to charge you in dollars, pounds or euros, that is Dynamic Currency Conversion and it costs 3–7 per cent. Beer, and the hours rule that changed

Thailand's afternoon alcohol ban is gone. Since late 2025 the rule has been simple: shops may sell alcohol from 11:00 to midnight, with no 2pm–5pm blackout. Outside those hours the till refuses — it is automated, and arguing with the cashier achieves nothing.

Five Buddhist holidays remain full 24-hour dry days nationwide, including Ok Phansa on 26 October 2026. Shops sell nothing alcoholic on those days, hotel minibars included. • Build breakfast at the shop, not the hotel. About 80 baht against 450 — roughly 5,180 baht saved over a fortnight.
• Buy beer at the counter, drink it wherever. 60 baht against 150 at a beach bar; about 2,520 baht over two weeks at two a night.
• Never touch the minibar water. 7–14 baht against 40–80; roughly 1,000 baht over a fortnight.
• Pay in baht, always. Declining DCC saves 3–7 per cent on every card tap.
