Thailand Hotel Prices 2026: What a Room Costs a Night

Thailand budget travel is decided at the accommodation line more than anywhere else. Food runs about 250 baht a day and getting around Bangkok about 140. A room is 400 baht or 4,000 — and that one decision moves a two-week budget further than everything else put together. It is also where the most money quietly disappears into charges nobody quoted you at the point of booking.

This budget travel guide sets out what a bed actually costs across Thailand in 2026, in baht, and explains the 17.7 per cent that lands on a lot of hotel bills at checkout. Every figure was checked on 1 September 2026, at roughly 33.3 baht to the US dollar.

Every rate below is per room per night unless stated, for two people sharing where the room is private.

That 4,012-baht line is the one to be careful with. It is the genuine Bangkok average daily rate for the first half of 2026, down 2.1 per cent year on year with occupancy at 76.2 per cent — but it is an average across business and luxury stock, not a price you have to pay. A clean air-conditioned room near a BTS station is 700 baht. The 3,300-baht difference, over twelve nights, is 39,600 baht: about $1,190, or the flights home.

The 17.7 per cent nobody quotes: Thailand's ++ pricing

Look for two plus signs after a rate. “2,000++” is not 2,000 baht. The first plus is a 10 per cent service charge; the second is 7 per cent VAT, and the VAT is calculated after the service charge has been added. The compounding is what catches people:

• Advertised rate: 2,000 baht
• Plus 10% service charge: 2,200 baht
• Plus 7% VAT on that subtotal: 2,354 baht

That is the most common single mistake in Thailand budget travel planning. The uplift is 17.7 per cent, not 17. On a ten-night stay at that rate it is 3,540 baht — about $106 — added to a booking you thought you had priced. A room quoted at 1,700 net is cheaper than a room quoted at 1,500++, and the second one looks 200 baht better on the search results page.

Where ++ applies, and where it does not

Guesthouses, hostels and small independent hotels almost always quote net — what you see is what you pay. Anything with a pool, a lobby and a brand behind it usually quotes ++, and so do hotel restaurants, spas and minibars. Booking platforms are inconsistent about folding the charges into the headline number, so read the price breakdown before the payment screen. And when you pay by card, decline any offer to be billed in your home currency: that is dynamic currency conversion, and the Thai baht exchange rate baked into it is typically 3–7 per cent worse than your own bank's.

Average cost per day Thailand: rooms city by city

Where you sleep matters more to Thailand budget travel than how long you stay. Two weeks in Chiang Mai at 600 baht a night is 8,400 baht. The same fortnight on Samui in February at 3,200 is 44,800. Nothing about the trip changes except the postcode and the month.

Five Thailand travel tips that cut the room line

Ask for the weekly or monthly rate. Guesthouses and bungalow operators discount hard for stays over about seven nights, often 20–40 per cent, and it is rarely advertised. You have to ask.

Travel the shoulder. September to October and March to May cut island and beach rates by more than half against December to February, for weather that is mostly fine.

Compare net against net. Add 17.7 per cent to every ++ rate before you compare it with anything, and the ranking often reverses.

Use the Asia-based platforms for small properties. Many Thai guesthouses and island bungalows never appear on the Western booking sites at all, and the ones that do are often listed higher.

Check what the location costs you. A 500-baht room that needs two 200-baht taxi rides a day is a 900-baht room. Near the rail lines it is a 540-baht room.
