Koh Samet is the cheapest beach escape from Bangkok, and almost nobody pays the cheap price. Thailand budget travel to the island costs 273 baht one way — an ordinary Ekkamai bus and the public slow ferry — against the 390 to 670 baht that a hotel-pickup van package charges for the same two seats. At 33.73 baht to the US dollar that is about $8.10 from Bangkok to the island pier, and the gap is pure booking convenience.

This budget travel guide prices every realistic route for October 2026: the hourly buses out of Ekkamai, the minibus-and-songthaew route through Rayong, the three piers at Ban Phe and the boats that leave them, and the 200-baht national park fee that almost no quote includes. Rayong province is 220 km from Bangkok, which makes Koh Samet the only island in the country you can reach from Sukhumvit before lunch on a public bus.

Read the fare column against the time column before you book. The spread is more than 6,000 baht for a journey that ends at the same pier on the same island.

The pattern runs through all Thailand travel costs: the premium does not buy speed, it buys a single booking reference. The van package arrives at Ban Phe at much the same hour as the 173-baht bus, because both sit in the same traffic on Highway 36.

The 273-baht route: an Ekkamai bus and the public ferry

Buses to Ban Phe leave Bangkok's Eastern Terminal at Ekkamai — 300 metres from BTS Ekkamai, so no taxi is needed from anywhere on the Sukhumvit line. Cherdchai Tour charges 173 baht one way and 306 return, with ten departures between 07:00 and 18:30. Rayong Tour runs the same road for 200 baht roughly hourly from 05:40 to 20:30, which is the service to take if you are travelling late. Other operators on the route are quoted at 266 to 309 baht, so the window you buy from matters more than the day you travel.

The ticket windows at Ekkamai. Each operator sells from its own counter at its own price, cash only, and the next departure time is chalked on the glass — which is why the 173-baht fare and the 309-baht fare sit two windows apart.

Journey time is three to four hours, and this single ticket is the whole secret of Thailand budget travel to Koh Samet. Ask for Ban Phe, not Rayong: the two are 20 km apart and the Ban Phe service drops you a short walk from the piers, while Rayong leaves you at a bus station with another fare to pay.

The Rayong route, and when it is worth taking

If every Ban Phe departure has gone, the fallback is cheap and reliable. Minibuses run from Ekkamai and Mo Chit to Rayong every 20 to 40 minutes from 04:40 to 20:00 for 160 to 162 baht, and dark-blue songthaews leave Rayong's old bus station for Ban Phe every 20 minutes between 06:00 and 18:00 for 40 baht. That is 200 baht and two changes against 173 baht and none, so it is a timetable fix rather than a saving.

Suvarnabhumi airport transit: the 3,500-baht mistake

Thailand budget travel starts at the airport railway station, not the taxi rank. A private car from Suvarnabhumi to the Samet piers is quoted at 3,545 to 6,732 baht, and from Don Mueang 4,208 to 6,078. Landing and riding straight to the coast costs more than the rest of the trip combined. Suvarnabhumi airport transit into town is 45 baht on the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai, then a BTS ride to Ekkamai for 20 to 50 baht — under 100 baht to reach the bus that costs 173. Arriving after the last bus, a night in a Bangkok guesthouse and the 05:40 departure still beats the taxi by thousands of baht.

Ban Phe's piers: the 100-baht ferry against the 200-baht speedboat

Ban Phe has several piers within a few hundred metres of each other, and the price depends on which one you walk into. Buy at the pier counter, not from the first person who approaches you on the pavement — Thailand budget travel here is a two-minute walk between ticket windows.

Here is the arithmetic that matters for a family. Four people crossing by speedboat both ways pay 1,600 baht, about $47; the same four on the public ferry pay 800, about $24. The ferry costs you 30 minutes each way and a seat on an open deck in the Gulf, which on a calm morning is the better half of the day anyway. Miss the last boat and the charter price is 2,000 baht and up, so aim to be at the pier by 17:00.

The 200-baht fee no booking site quotes: Mu Ko Samet national park

The whole island sits inside Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park, and the entrance fee is collected on arrival, in cash, per person, per entry. It is the single biggest line in a Koh Samet budget after the bus, and it is the one that catches people out at the gate.

Thai adult40$1.20
Thai child20$0.60

That five-to-one split is the standard category-2 rate under the national park schedule in force since June 2022, and it is the clearest example of Thailand's dual pricing a traveller will meet in a single day. Two adults and two children arriving from Bangkok pay 600 baht on top of their fares, which turns a 273-baht crossing into a 1,692-baht morning for the family. Budget it before you book the room, and pay it to a uniformed ranger at the checkpoint — park tickets sold by agents on the mainland are not official.

Getting around the island, and what a day costs

Green songthaews wait at Na Dan pier and charge 20 to 200 baht a head depending on how far south you are going, with the per-person price assuming a full truck of ten — travelling alone you either wait or pay for the vehicle. Motorbike hire is 300 to 500 baht a day, bicycles 200 (or 150 a day for two days or more), and golf carts 1,000. A plate of pad thai on the island runs about 70 baht, an hour of Thai massage 250, and refilling a six-litre water bottle 5 to 10.

Cheap travel Thailand habits carry over to the island. That keeps the average cost per day Thailand travellers expect on a mid-range island within reach: roughly 900 to 1,200 baht a head for a bungalow, three meals and a songthaew, which is dearer than cheap food in Bangkok but far below Phuket or Samui. Eat in Na Dan village rather than on the beachfront and the gap narrows further.

Thailand travel tips: sort money and data before the boat

Na Dan has ATMs and a handful of exchange windows, and both are priced like an island. The foreign-card surcharge is 220 baht at the machine, and 250 to 350 baht all-in once your own bank adds its share — our guide to Thailand ATM fees works the numbers through. Draw several days of cash in one withdrawal before you leave the mainland, and do your Thai baht exchange at SuperRich Thailand or an equivalent city counter rather than at the pier. A local SIM card Thailand-wide is 299 to 599 baht at any 7-Eleven, which beats both roaming and the island kiosks.

Bottom line: your Thailand budget travel savings summary

  • 273 baht is the honest floor — 173 on the Cherdchai bus from Ekkamai plus 100 on the public ferry, about $8.10.
  • Van and combo packages cost 375 to 670 baht for the same arrival time. The premium buys one booking reference, not a faster trip.
  • Always add 200 baht a head for the national park, 100 for children. A family of four budgets 600 baht before anyone sees a beach.
  • The slow ferry halves the boat fare. 100 baht against 150–200, for 30 extra minutes on deck.
  • Never take a taxi from the airport — 3,545 baht and up, against 45 baht on the Airport Rail Link and 173 on the bus.
  • Draw cash and buy a SIM on the mainland. Island ATMs charge the same 220-baht surcharge but island exchange rates are worse.
