Thailand budget travel throws up few journeys as badly priced as the one to Koh Tao. The same island, on the same day, costs 675 baht or 2,000 depending on which counter you walk up to. There is no airport on Koh Tao, so everyone arrives by boat from Chumphon — and the gap between the cheapest honest way of getting to that boat and the way most tourists book is close to 1,300 baht a head.
This budget travel guide prices every realistic route for October 2026: the joint bus-and-ferry ticket from Khao San Road, the 192-baht night train to Chumphon, the pier transfer that nobody includes in their quote, and what flying actually costs once you add the two transfers at either end. At about 33.64 baht to the US dollar, the cheapest sensible door-to-door total is roughly 735 baht — about $22.
Thailand budget travel: Bangkok to Koh Tao, every option priced
Read the price column against the hours column. Unlike most Thai routes, the cheap option here is also one of the fastest.
| How you travel | Fare (baht) | Door-to-door time | Departs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joint bus + ferry ticket (Lomprayah) | from 675 | about 9 hr day, 11 hr night | Rambuttri Rd or Pinklao |
| Night train 3rd class + transfer + fast ferry | 792 | 12–14 hr | Krung Thep Aphiwat |
| Night train 3rd class + transfer + catamaran | 942 | 12–14 hr | Krung Thep Aphiwat |
| Joint bus + ferry, catamaran class | 1,100–1,260 | about 9 hr | Rambuttri Rd or Pinklao |
| Night train 2nd class a/c berth + transfer + catamaran | 1,330–1,670 | 12–14 hr | Krung Thep Aphiwat |
| Fly to Chumphon + transfer + catamaran | 1,750–1,850 | 6–7 hr | Don Mueang (DMK) |
| Fly to Samui + Lomprayah from Maenam | 4,200–7,000 | 5–6 hr | Suvarnabhumi (BKK) |
Two things fall out of that. The joint ticket is the cheapest thing on the list and the second fastest, which almost never happens in Thailand travel costs. And the Samui routing — which plenty of agents will sell you — costs six times the bottom line to save three hours.
The 675-baht joint ticket: one booking, Bangkok to Mae Haad
Lomprayah sells a single through-ticket covering the coach to Chumphon, the pier shuttle and the boat to Koh Tao. Booked direct, Bangkok to Koh Tao runs from 675 baht up to about 1,260 depending on date and whether you land on the catamaran or the slower fast ferry. Day departures leave around 06:00 and arrive mid-afternoon; the night coach leaves about 21:00 and connects to the 07:00 boat.
It goes from the Rambuttri Road office beside Khao San, and from the old Southern Bus Terminal at Pinklao — not from Sai Tai Mai, which is the mistake that costs people a taxi fare. Check-in closes 45 minutes before departure. The practical case for this ticket is not the headline number: it is that one booking covers three legs, so a late coach is the operator's problem rather than yours.
The night train: 192 baht to Chumphon, plus the transfer nobody quotes
A third-class seat on a Rapid service from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Chumphon is 192 baht. Train 167 leaves at 20:30 and arrives 04:20; 169 leaves 17:30 for 01:25. The Express trains 83 and 85 charge 232 baht in third and arrive at 02:18 and 03:43, which is too early to be useful. Air-conditioned berths run 580 to 920 baht, first class 994 to 1,424.
Then comes the line that gets left off: the Lomprayah pier at Thung Makham Noi is 30 to 35 km south of town, and Boonsiri's pier at Pak Nam is 15 km out. The ferry companies run shuttles from the station for 150 baht when you buy the transfer with the boat ticket, or 250 baht from Chumphon airport. Budget it, or a 192-baht train turns into a 500-baht taxi scramble at half past four in the morning.
Chumphon to Koh Tao: every boat compared
| Boat | Pier | Departs | Crossing | Fare (baht) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Night boat (slow) | Chumphon Night Ferry Pier | 21:00–23:00 | 6–8 hr | 300–600 |
| Lomprayah fast ferry | Thung Makham Noi | 08:00 | 3 hr | from 450 |
| Songserm | Thung Makham Noi | about 07:00 | 2 hr 30 | 500–550 |
| Lomprayah catamaran | Thung Makham Noi | 07:00 and 13:15 | 1 hr 45 | 600–750 |
| Boonsiri catamaran | Pak Nam | 06:45 and 13:00 | 2 hr | from 750 |
The night boat is the cheapest crossing in Thailand for the distance and the one experienced travellers quietly use: a mattress on a deck, 300 to 600 baht, arriving at dawn with a night's accommodation saved. It runs on alternating nights from local operators, cancels in rough weather, and leaves from a third pier 8 km from town that the shuttle does not serve. Treat it as a bonus if the dates line up, not a plan.
Flying: 6 hours, and where the arithmetic turns
Nok Air and Thai AirAsia fly Don Mueang to Chumphon (CJM) from roughly 800 to 1,000 baht without a checked bag. Add the A1 bus to the airport at 33 baht, the 250-baht airport-to-pier transfer and a 600-baht catamaran and you are at about 1,750 all in, door to door in six or seven hours. That is a genuine option — it is roughly 1,000 baht more than the joint ticket and saves most of a night.
What is not an option at any sensible budget is routing through Samui. Only Bangkok Airways serves that airport, fares run 3,500 to 6,000 baht, and the Lomprayah boat from Maenam adds 600 to 750 more. Flying into Suvarnabhumi from abroad does not change this: Suvarnabhumi airport transit to the city is 45 baht on the Airport Rail Link, and from there the overland routes above are all cheaper than a connecting flight.
Arriving at Mae Haad: the last 1.5 kilometres
Koh Tao has no metered taxis and the pickup-truck fares are fixed: 440 baht from the pier to Sairee Beach, the same to Chalok Baan Kao. Drivers do not negotiate, but they will wait for a shared load, so four people pay 110 each. Sairee is 1.5 km on flat road — walk it with a daypack and the 440 baht becomes nothing at all. Longtail boat taxis start around 250 baht and climb to 700 for the far bays.
Thailand travel tips: money on the island
Koh Tao is a cash island with the worst rates in the south. The foreign-card ATM fee is 220 baht a withdrawal here as everywhere in the country, and island exchange counters typically give 1 to 1.5 baht per dollar less than a city shop — so a lazy $400 Thai baht exchange on arrival costs you 400 to 600 baht, most of the fare you just saved. Change money at SuperRich Thailand or an equivalent counter in Bangkok before you leave, and draw a week's cash in one withdrawal rather than three. Our guide to Thailand ATM fees does the sums. A local SIM card Thailand-wide costs 299 to 599 baht at a 7-Eleven, cheaper than buying one on the island.

Bottom line: your Thailand budget travel savings summary
- Cheapest realistic total is about 735 baht door to door — the joint bus-and-ferry ticket from 675, plus local transport to Rambuttri Road.
- The night train route costs 792 baht with the fast ferry: 192 train, 150 transfer, 450 boat.
- Always add the 150-baht pier transfer to any train or bus quote. The piers are 15 to 35 km out of town.
- Night boat at 300–600 baht is the cheapest crossing and saves a room, when it runs.
- Flying via Chumphon is about 1,750 baht for six hours door to door — fair value if time is short.
- Never route via Samui at 4,200 to 7,000 baht. It saves one hour over flying to Chumphon.
- Walk the 1.5 km from Mae Haad to Sairee and skip the fixed 440-baht truck, or share it four ways.
- Change money in Bangkok. Island rates cost 400–600 baht on a $400 exchange.
Koh Tao runs cheaper than Phuket or Samui once you are on it, so the money saved getting there goes further than it would further south. Our comparison of five Thai cities by average cost per day shows where a baht stretches furthest, and Bangkok to Koh Samui runs the same arithmetic for the bigger island next door.
