The first baht decision of the trip is the one most travellers get wrong. You clear immigration at Suvarnabhumi, see the yellow SuperRich booth on the arrivals side, and change a few hundred dollars because the queue is short and the rate looks fine. By the time you reach the city the same notes would have bought roughly 400 more baht. Thailand budget travel is decided in these small, early choices — not in the big hotel or flight line items.

The hotel desk is almost never competitive. The arrivals booth is convenient and expensive. SuperRich city is the default for any amount past a taxi fare. The 32.32 figure is an estimate of the usual arrivals spread; it is not a guarantee. If the board shows something better, take it — and still photograph the board.
Airport Rail Link hours and the net-baht arithmetic
ARL City Line runs from roughly 05:30 to midnight. Platform is one level above arrivals; ticket machines and the manned counter both sell the 45-baht single to Phaya Thai. Journey time is about 30 minutes. From Phaya Thai station the SuperRich branch is a short walk.

Four hundred baht is not theoretical. It is two pad kra pao meals, a full day of BTS rides, or the difference between a shared minivan and a private sedan later in the week. Thailand budget travel compounds these 400-baht decisions.
Which SuperRich, and when each opens
Three SuperRich locations matter on a typical first day in Bangkok.
- B-floor / Silom area — longer hours, roughly 05:30–23:30 on many days. Useful if you land early or need cash late.
- Phaya Thai — the natural stop after the Airport Rail Link. Typical window 10:00–20:00. Confirm the day’s board; public holidays can shift it.
- Ratchadamri — solid day-two option if you are already on the BTS. Same city rates, slightly less queue pressure than the Phaya Thai branch on busy afternoons.
Carry crisp, unmarked USD notes. SuperRich rejects torn or heavily written-on bills. Change the bulk of what you need for the first week; leave a small buffer in the original currency for the departure day if you prefer.
When the airport booth is still the rational move
Three situations justify using the arrivals counter:
- You need only a small taxi or Grab float (under ~1,000 baht) and will change the rest the next morning.
- You land after midnight or before the first ARL of the day — the train is not running, so the net calculation collapses.
- You are changing a modest amount ($100–$200) and the time cost of the train-plus-walk exceeds the spread for that day.
For $300 or more between roughly 10:00 and 19:00, the city counter after the 45-baht rail link is the higher-return path. Outside those hours the airport booth or an ATM becomes the practical choice.
ATM cross-check and the week-of-cash plan
Thai ATMs commonly charge 220–250 baht per foreign withdrawal, on top of your own bank’s fee. A single large SuperRich change can replace several ATM hits.
